Cornell’s office of Infrastructure Properties and Planning runs two transportation services: The Campus- to-Campus bus service (C2C) and the Red Runner internal courier service. The IPP office would like to gain more insight into both of these transportation services through the use of a BI solution. Executives at both transportation services are interested in learning its service’s overall operation performance. In particular, Red Runner executives are keen to analyzing peak time / location, and different service options; and managers at C2C would like to analyze its ridership (bookings, moves, & cancellations), deferred income, and realized income.

The final deliverable for this project is a dashboard that displays key performance indicators (KPI) of the executives’ choices, with support of data visualization elements. The overall goal is that by leveraging the dashboard, executives could save time in daily data extraction and focus on analysis.

To approach the problem, we plan to follow the agile approach. This methodology enables the team to design, develop and test different features of the service quickly as well as reassess priorities as the project progresses. We will draft the initial requirement document and data models for feedback gathering purposes, then based on suggestions and concerns we receive from clients, we will make changes accordingly. For this project, we will use WhereScape for Extract, Transform, Load (ETL), and Tableau for data visualization. Data modelling will be done both on paper or on Microsoft Visio or other similar software.
